Question of the Day 9/4/09:
“What is a childhood career dream you had?” – Traci Toguchi
In the video, I mentioned being a ballerina, perhaps due to little ballerinas being on my birthday cake, heh.
Also, Debbie Gibson aka a singer/songwriter.
Had formal ballet training, and am a professional singer/songwriter.
Kewl beans!
What is a childhood career dream you had?
~ Happy Aloha Friday ~
Traci,
Thank the Gods and all their thunder you did not become Debbie Gibson !!! Her top-ten 80’s material used drive me banana-cracker-sandwich. Too much bubble-gum sticking to me feets! Best be you, me thinks. You would have made a terrific Ballerina. Need tough ankles, lol. And to think you are not even Russian. I can see it now Traci Dawn, the Punk Rocker, LMAO!
Big wave-power-chord … Jump back, I almost hurt myself…
Career Dream: At first, I was interested in psychology. When I was a kid I read Psychology Today and was interested in human psychology. Maybe I was insecure and wanted to get over it. I am not sure, ha!
I studied music as a kid. But seemed to have little time once I got into High School. I took up running X-Cross-Country and Track, so concentrated on that early in HS. Funny, I always had a dream well fantasy I was a Rocker in a really really suave cool band. Wot would make our band uber-shaka-kewla, would be we would play original songs that could not be put in any category of music. Also, the Fantasy Band would play any cover better then the original tune. Talk the talk about ego-driven. The other was to become a decent writer.
I recall talking to a college recruiter one day. The other dream was to get out of my parent house and get on my own. Recruiter said I would be in school a long time and need a Phd for Psychology which is probably true. I used to tinker with electronics, so went into Electrical Engineering. I spent a career doing that. I’d be still doing that if said company had not layed me off. Still may do more of that in future, but early on I realized … hey I’m tired of being poor as a slave-to-system engineer.
My second career dream was to become an investor and that has been a hobby of mine for sometime. After events out of my control, I am doing that full-time now, but want to be a trader as well. Funny the more you learn about Wall Street the more you “hate the bastards” in how they make the common people suffer the misery now with a 9.7% unemployment rate : (
There is huge amounts of sly under-handed rubbish of the robber barons to this day.
So, my dream is to beat them at their own game. Tough goal…
Reality, I just want to keep my head above water and get down that long windy road.
Everybody Wants To Rule The World
Welcome to your life
Theres no turning back
Even while we sleep
We will find you
Acting on your best behaviour
Turn your back on mother nature
Everybody wants to rule the world
Its my own design
Its my own remorse
Help me to decide
Help me make the most
Of freedom and of pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world
Theres a room where the light wont find you
Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down
When they do Ill be right behind you
So glad weve almost made it
So sad they had to fade it
Everybody wants to rule the world
I cant stand this indecision
Married with a lack of vision
Everybody wants to rule the world
Say that youll never never never never need it
One headline why believe it ?
Everybody wants to rule the world
All for freedom and for pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world

Tears For Fears – Everybody Wants to Rule the World
Can’t resist! Way kewl movie and tune from 80’s. William Petersen from CSI was in this flick and featured one of the first reverse traffic chase scenes, wack!

Aloha & mahalo James!
Had responded to a commenter at http://geeks.pirillo.com/profile/TraciToguchi that I wanted to be a psychologist too, and had taken classes to support that.
RE: music – did/do you play any instruments?
TT,
without the “green & yellow” pill ie. prosaic, zantek ha!
Yea, thought you might find “shrink” comment compelling. Some training in this area can keep ya zane
As you may recall, I admitted to playing omp-paa-paa on accordion, aka Daddio had a squeeze-box and played all night long, lol…
I had an amped-up electric one called a Cordovox, pretty high tech for it’s time. Had synth box with an array full of triode vacuum tubes and other box was a 100 Watt mono amp. So, you could play it w/ or w/o using bellows.
Of late, I play cds, dvds, mp3’s or what ever that puts out that sound through an amplifier in me cave… ; )
I am listening to Bay Area Jazz at moment as I type’O.
I wanted to be a marine biologist. Wonder how things would have turned out if we stayed in Huntington Beach when my dad worked at the beach….. I’d probably a thin(ner), blonder, tanned surfer talking to Flipper.
If your in Hawaii Fortress, I think you did just fine IMHO! Besides Hawaii is teaming with Flippers and colorful fish, ya
I applied to scripps institute of oceanography in SD, Ca back in day as a EE. I wanted to get my foot in door in Ocean Research. Not one response on resume’s, bummer. Guess you gotta be a crack Phd marine biologist from hot-arse school to pull that off.
Who doesn’t want to live in La Jolla, Ca. ! LOL
LOL That’s funny.

It’s odd that the TV Show “Mad Men” didn’t exist when I was a kid, because that was the perception I had of advertising people. I would watch Darren Stevens on Bewitched and think, “I want to have a job like that.” Actually, I thought I might be an advertising copywriter.
Well, when I finally got to UH, there was no Advertising major! So the career counselor suggested I major in journalism and minor in marketing, which would get me into an ad agency by way of public relations. And the rest, as they say, is history!
Melissa,
Given the “Mad Men” show in ’70s, would MM have negatively impacted your decision to go into Advertising vs. a fun comedy show like ol Darren was in Bewitched?
I am sure a modern “Mad Man and Women in Advertising” can be well illustrated in 2009, since very competitive industry under pressure of change with likes of Google and online ad imprint embedding vs paper and TV ads today…
Real cool you achieved your goals out of Uni Hawaii by putting you own program together to make it happen ! Valuable stuff to know for kids trying to figure out their would-be careers…
Sweet story
I forgot Darrin Stevens was in advertising! LOL
Was too busy trying to figure out which episode was with the new and old Darrin (both with real first name Dick BTW!).
I am RLOF, LMAO… Good memory to recall both Darrin’s had real names “Dick” too funny
Thought “new” Darrin was never as funny! Old “Dick” Darrin was visually funnier with those “big ears”.
Frankly, I was in love with “Lizzy” who played the witch. That “nose” wiggle was a great concept. Woulda shoulda coulda have come in useful many times in life, lol.
The mother-in-law deal was hilarious by the way. All kinds of symbolism in that show regarding mother-in-laws and witches brew, lol!
Wiggles nose for “submit comment” button… Go!
I don’t know what age category of “childhood” you may be talking about… but I went through several stages.
I wanted to become a Captain on a Big Ferry boat because when I was little I used to commute via ferry in parts of Washington State.
As I grew older… I WAS GOING TO BE A PRO ATHLETE… Little did I forget that my body wasn’t meant to be a Pro-Athlete’s body.
As I got into college… I thought about journalism… and then learned nearly 15 years ago that Journalism was a dead career.
I switched to Communications with an emphasis on Distance Learning when it came to my senior thesis…. which lead to a decade at the Dept. of Education.
I’m still young… so I still have many aspirations and still feel like a “Career” as one would like to call it still lies in front of me.
If I don’t find my “Career”… I’m quite content being happy in the field I’m in knowing that I’m broke ass… but don’t have to worry about my wife or son starving.
Kewl evolution ~
That’s what I love about life: it’s an evolution.
We can always seek to live our potential…
Thanks much for that well written blog post.
